Ludum Dare 4th 48-Hour Competition

ShaolinMan's Development Log

Umm...so this one technically isn't over at Ludum Dare. It is in the forums though...

And, lo, it is said that ShaolinMan would leave his log of development here, and there was much apathy...

The contest doesn't start until April 16...so what the hell are you doing here!?! What am I doing here...

Contest started a couple hours ago, with the category "Infection". Looks like I'm done...

Okay, not really...

Been working on some basic things while I'm trying to figure out what I'm actually gonna do for my game. Right now I've mainly got a couple managers for graphics and input cracked out, so there's not much to show for yet (actually, I'm surprised I stayed up this late with how tired I am right now). Hopefully I'll have an idea or two by the time I wake up.

Woke up a little while ago, did my morning thing, now I just need to settle on an idea...

Blah blah should've used Kyra...

I settled on making a game where you're trying to stop an infection of zombie cows, keeping as many of your cows alive and unaffected as possible. To get rid of a zombie cow, you have to soak it in gasoline and light it on fire. If you don't soak it enough, it won't burn, and you only have a limited amount of gas each level. Later on, you might get other weapons, like explosives and such.

I've got a sprite animation system in. You can also scale surfaces when drawing. I spent way too much time working on this crap...

Here's a couple of my animations:

Main character A cow...

I don't have anything set up for creating any sort of animation in a reasonable amount of time on my computer. These were both done by sketching out the basic drawing on paper, taking a picture with my camera, and filling in and doing everything else with Gimp. The cow went a bit faster than the main character, mainly because I kept on messing up the main character. =/

Wakey wakey...I'm probably not gonna get done. =/

Man, those are some big tiles...

Well, a bit after the last (first?) screenshot, I decided to call it quits. I'm not gonna get done by the deadline, and I have a massive headache, so I'm gonna back off now.

This was probably a bad weekend for me anyway...I didn't really feel up to it these past couple days. On the plus side, at least I got further than the last competition. Still kinda upsetting though since I had a completed entry the first time I tried back in the first competition. =/

Anyway, for those interested, I packaged up the work I got done and posted it here: my entry.

It compiles using GCC 3.3.1 no problem, barring a couple harmless warnings when compiling with "-Wall". I didn't have time to test it in Windows and include a VC++ project, so there may be a few issues if you want to try to compile it in something other than a Unix-based environment.

I'll try to put together a post-mortem sometime later on this week, but for now I need to rest my eyes. =]
